Suki and her Babies

At the moment we have a very special lady staying with us.  It is a long story, but Suki, who was obviously pregnant, had been handed in to the SBA Police as a stray.  BARC, her only option other than destruction, does not accept bitches that are in pup.  This is quite correct because BARC does not have the facilities for whelping bitches and their babies.  The vet was due to put Suki to sleep on Monday 21st January 08.  Fortunately for her, the vet was too busy and after much discussion we decided to take her in.

The ideal result would have been to have the babies removed and Suki spayed at the same time, but according to the vet she was too far pregnant for this to take place humanely.  We still decided to take her into our care.  What a good decision that was, she is a fabulous little dog.  Good tempered and already house trained.  She is great with other dogs, I have three and Carole has two. In such an advanced state of pregnancy ours are not the ideal homes for her to live in, but she has been great in both.  She will hopefully deliver her babies safely and we will allow her to rear some of them, unfortunately the other will be put to sleep.  So if you could all bear in mind that from early April we will be needing homes for the babies and a very, very special home for Suki.

On the 17th February Suki gave birth to eight beautiful babies.  Although she had a birthing room all of her own (one of my bedrooms) Suki chose to have her babies in my living room with me, Carole and both our husbands in attendance.  (not true really as the men watched Match of the Day but we got the highest score).  A great show of trust by Suki and a real privilege for us.  We kept four puppies.  Mum and babies doing fine.
